Welcome!

Welcome to the world of Fantasy Football!

This is a joint project between Phill Cristofaro from Brunswick East Primary School (Melbourne, Australia) and Tony Iannone from Nathaniel Alexander School (Charlotte, North Carolina, USA). Our schools are taking part in a joint maths investigation project called, "International Fantasy Football 2004"...

The project is based on a code of football called "Aussie Rules" (Australian Football League) and will involve classes from each school.

FINALS FEVER!

STOP PRESS!!!

AND THE WINNER IS...THE IMMORTALIZED COUGARS! With a score of 166 to 144, the underdogs have taken the Flag - against all expectations to the contrary! Congratulations to the Cougars and commiserations to the Donkeys...

VIDEO CONFERENCE WITH THE US

The really exciting thing about all this is our video conference with Tony's class on Friday 4th June (very early!). It's our Grand Final Breakfast / Dinner (breakfast for us, dinner for the Americans!) and the students from both classes will have the opportunity to share their thoughts, ideas, reflections and perform their own version of a team song.

There will be a few surprises in store as well...

Parents are more than welcome to attend. Speak to your child for details...

What is Fantasy Football?

Fantasy Football is a great way to learn about the mathematics of sport.

The concept is simple: children make up their own fictitious "teams" in groups of 3 or 4 and select 15 players from any AFL club. Each week the "teams" choose 8 players from their list to represent their side for the weekends matches. On Monday, when all the player statisitics have come in, the children compare their team's overall performance with that of their virtual opponent. A ladder is kept and at the end of 7 weeks, there are virtual "finals".

Why...?

This is a very exciting and engaging way to collect and sort meaningful data. The competition teaches and reinforces the following skills:

  • higher order thinking (analysis, synthesis, evaluation)
  • using formulae (adding, subtracting, multiplying, averaging, calculating percentages)
  • prediction (Chance and Data learning outcomes)
  • communication between team-mates, opponents and teachers (cross-continentally!)
  • technology skills in using spreadsheets and data charts to track team and player performance
  • reading a variety of texts that scaffold each child's knowledge and understanding of the sport.

Apart from being a great learning opportunity, the children are encouraged to foster global cooperation and learn about each other's culture.

When does it start?

The competition will run from the week ending (Friday) 2nd of April until the week ending (Friday) 4th of June. Teams will play off for the "Grand Final" on the latter weekend (see the calendar above for more details).

What is "Aussie Rules"?

No, it's not a mad organisation intent on world domination, it's a sport that is all of the following...

  • action-packed!
  • high scoring
  • easy to follow (really, it is!)
  • cultural and historic
  • physical (to play, not to watch...)
  • great for maths extension...
