About the Two Cities Project

This project is a global exchange between Brunswick East Primary School in Melbourne, Victoria and Nathaniel Alexander School in Charlotte, North Carolina. The aims of the exchange are:

  • To enhance global co-operation and exchange
  • Provide children with learning opportunities across the curriculum
  • Provide links with the local communities

Both 5/6C and 4/5C will be involved in linking up with their Charlotte counterparts. Both Phill and Chris have put a lot of planning and thought into the logistics of the project and are also working closely with Andrew Hocking from IBM who is providing technical support.

Resources

The Learning Village web-site will be the vehicle for both schools as they exchange information.

As Reinventing Education Project schools, both sites have their own Learning Village web-sites (you can visit Nathaniel Alexander School by clicking the link at the bottom of this page).

The children will create their own web-pages that exchange information between the two sites.

The "Italian Connection" Project

Lisa Audino and Susan Smith are concurrently running a similar Italian exchange with a school in Italy. Click the link below to find out more...

Project Content

It is envisaged the project will span two terms and will culminate in a completed web page. The content will be based on the following areas:

General orientation

  • Where is the city?
  • A map
  • Population details
  • School orientation

Brief history
  • On what principles has the city flourished?

Places to visit
  • What are the attractions of the city?

Sports and entertainment
  • What's popular and why?

Charlotte and Melbourne: a comparison
  • This is the 'So what?' section. It's where the students compare and contrast the information. It involves the higher levels of thinking such as analysis

Links and acknowledgements
  • The completed web-pages will become part of the school's overall web-site and will be open to the community.

Integrated Units of Work

The upper school classes at Brunswick East PS are currently studying World Geography as their integrated unit of work. As the students become "knowledge rich" through related classroom activities they will be given the opportunity to apply some of their knowledge in a purposeful context (ie. exchange of ideas and information). This project work is in line with our investigation into the developing of higher order thinking skills in our students. Click here to find out more about Bloom's Taxonomy of Thinking...
