The BEPSUS Project

What began as an attempt to create a philosophy blog site for parents and students, has now grown into a global classroom project involving schools from opposite ends of the planet.

The BEPSUS project is a collaborative exchange and uses Philosophy for Children and inquiry learning as the basis for research and shared understandings in response to the following over-arching question:

What does it mean to be an American / Australian?

The BEPSUS Project site can be found at the bottom of the page.

Herald Sun Teacher of the Year Awards 2007

An exciting and recent update is that my colleague and friend, Jill Howells and I have been shortlisted for the "Innovative School Award" in educational leadership for the Herald Sun Teacher of the Year Awards. Our Principal, Gail Bernard, nominated us for our work in developing Philosophy for Children across the school as a driver of inquiry learning and whole school change.

The awards dinner is on August 31st so we'll have to wait and see how it goes. It's always nice to be acknowledged...

Philosophy for Children (P4C)...

In mid 2006 Jill Howells and I successfully applied for Teacher Professional Leave from which we were each awarded 45 days to implement Philosophy for Children as a structured program across Brunswick East Primary School.

This has given Jill and I the flexibility and time to devote to the development of strategic plans, participate in professional development and work closely with colleagues in the development of teaching skills.

In 2007 it is part of my Action Plan to create a DVD documentary that demonstrates the pedagogy and behind-the-scenes development of P4C. This will serve as a teaching aid, promotional DVD for the School Community and reflective learning piece. Many hours of footage have been taken and I am due to begin the editing process shortly. The DVD should be completed by the middle of the year (2007).

Philosophy DVD

As part of my Philosophy Action Plan I am responsible for the production of a DVD documentary about Philosophy @ BEPS. The DVD will be used to celebrate the achievements of the students in the development of their thinking skills as well as showcase to the community the innovative work being done in this area. It will also be used as a teaching aid for interested teachers / schools. At present I'm heavily involved in filming and will begin editing within the next month. The DVD will be complete by the middle of the year.

Update: April 2007:Lots of footage has been collected and I'm about to lock myself away to piece together the various chapters of how Philosophy has been developed at BEPS to be a major curriculum driver. This process has been a steep learning curve for me and I've enjoyed working primarily within the medium of digital video. It's been great to interview teachers and kids about Philosophy and I hope I can create an end product that serves as both a celebration of a whole school achievement and as a teaching tool for interested teachers. Watch this space...

Update: May 2007
May has been an interesting month! I've learnt a lot about running a podcast site (ie. The "BEPSUS" project) and how to use Final Cut Express on my shiny new iMac. The best thing about BEPSUS has been watching middle primary students really develop their independent inquiry skills. The engagement factor has been terrific. The downside of the process has been managing the individual learning needs of a large number of learners who have gone in so many directions: research about sport, art, history, popular culture, personalities...the list has been seemingly endless. Making students a big part of the decision-making process has been a key to the project's success. The video conference between the two schools is in June so it will be an interesting way to culminate...
