Student work online: a rationale

Many thanks for taking the time to visit our assembly area for student web-pages.

With access to technology increasing there is enormous potential in using the Internet as a resource for presenting digital work samples. Teachers and students, alike, are finding it a place where work products can be shared with peers, professionals, family and community (local and global).

Used as a critical learning tool, the Internet provides an unprecendented access to school programs and is a forum in the celebration of learning. Students are highly engaged by technology and as the 21st Century confronts us, the sky is the limit.

Brunswick East Primary School prides itself on the development of digital work samples for students. This evolving collection is the culmination of an Action Research process by staff in achieving best practice implementation of ICT in the classroom. The fundamentals of this implementation are:

  • Rich Assessment Tasks: using technology as part of open-ended, Rich Assessment Tasks ("RATS"). These are tasks that are designed to achieve a wide range of learning outcomes via a technology design brief.
  • Authentic learning: this is where technology is embedded as a natural and seamless extension of the inquiry learning process. It's where children are empowered to decide directions for their learning and to have ownership over the process.
  • Engagement: technology has a high motivation factor in learning and teachers use this to an advantage when carefully designing tasks for students.
  • Reflective practices: sustained improvement in terms of work practices and products is dependent upon self, peer and teacher assessment. The most effective of these is the use of multimedia rubrics.
